In computer science and mathematics, a variable (IPA pronunciation: ) (sometimes called a pronumeral) is a symbolic representation denoting a quantity or expression. In mathematics, a variable often represents an "unknown" quantity that has the potential to change; in computer science, it represents a place where a quantity can be stored. Variables are often contrasted with constants, which are known and unchanging.

The term has a similar meaning in the physical sciences and engineering: a variable is a quantity whose value may vary over the course of an experiment (including simulations), across samples, or during the operation of a system. Variables are generally distinct from parameters, although what is a variable in one context may be a parameter in another. For more on this distinction, see the article on "parameter".

In applied statistics, a variable is a measurable factor, characteristic, or attribute of an individual or a system—in other words, something that might be expected to vary over time or between individuals.

In mathematical statistics, "variable" has a technical meaning. Random variables are defined in the mathematical context of measure theory as measurable functions from a probability space to a measurable space.

Hasn't been on digg for a long time but worth a re-post."18 Bedazzling Names. Choose variable names with irrelevant emotional connotation. e.g.: marypoppins = ( superman + starship ) / god; This confuses the reader because they have difficulty disassociating the emotional connotations of the words from the logic they're trying to think about."

They found a way to make a much simpler analysis of atomic nucleii. Math. analysis of a nucleus of an atom of nickel currently requires solving an equation with a billion variables on a supercomputer. The new analysis can be performed on a laptop and gets almost the same result. Utilizes proton-neutron pairs (copies electron-pair technique).

Examples on how to create shared class in VB.net and use this to store values which can be accessed from across the application with out a global variable.

The folate content of foods is inherently variable and a large fraction of the folate consumed each day comes from foods that are frequently ingested, but not particularly concentrated, sources of the vitamin. Excellent food sources of folate (>55 µg/d) include fortified cereals, citrus fruits and juices, asparagus, Brussels sprouts, spinach, bake

Modern software architectures heavily promote the use of interfaces. Originally conceived as a means to separate specification from implementation, popular programming languages toady accommodate interfaces as special kinds of types that can be used – in place of classes – in variable declarations.
