Midwest
Last update: Friday 10th of September 2010
The Midwestern United States (or Midwest) refers to the north-central states of the United States of America, specifically Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota, and North Dakota. Both the geographic center of the contiguous U.S. (in Kansas) and the population center of the U.S. (now in Missouri) are in the Midwest. The United States Census Bureau divides this region into the East North Central States (essentially the Great Lakes States); and the West North Central States (essentially the Great Plains States).
The term Midwest has been in common use for over 100 years. Other designations for the region have fallen into disuse, such as the "Northwest" or "Old Northwest" (from Northwest Territory), "Mid-America," or "Heartland". Since the book Middletown appeared in 1929, sociologists have often used Midwestern cities, and the Midwest generally, as "typical" of the entire nation.
CHICAGO – In researching Montreal-based Weblo.com, it is hard to tell if the new online social network that marketsvirtual assets based on actual property represents the beginning or the end of the second wave of the Internet boom.
This spring in the U.S. Midwest you will hear the loudest and most astonishing "bug choir" of at least the last seventeen years. Though you probably won’t be motivated to sing along to the piercing sound, for the amazing story behind it and sheer volume of participants (billions!) in this "choir," you’ll find it is truly a spectacle to behold.
Chicago? New York? California? Suprisingly, the best hospitals are in the Midwest. According to a new study performed by Solucient, more than half of the hospitals falling into the top 100 were from the Midwest. And two states in particular--Michigan and Ohio--accounted for a striking 30 of the top 100 hospitals.
Interesting way of previewing the tournament.
One day of 60 degrees in the Midwest and already I'm thinking Spring. Here is an incredible set of water droplet photos that capture Spring and it's flowers at their best.
