A Christian is a follower of Jesus of Nazareth, referred to as the Christ. Christians believe Jesus to be the Son of God, who lived a life free of sin, who at the end of his earthly life was crucified, and then on the third day, rose from the dead, and later ascended into heaven, with the promise to return.

Most Christians believe in the Trinity or One God in three persons: Father (the Source, the Eternal Majesty); the Son (the eternal Logos or Word, incarnate as Jesus of Nazareth); and the Holy Spirit (the Paraclete or advocate). Today, it is estimated that there are approximately 2.1 billion Christians.

Most Americans oppose violence spurred by religious fundamentalism, but few agree on how to address it. In books like The End of Faith and Letter to a Christian Nation, author Sam Harris contends that religion itself--not its more extreme forms--is to blame. The Christian right has begun to strip gays and lesbians of their constitutional rights and render them second-class citizens. Since the rise of the “christian right” and George Bush christians in this country have gotten a bad rap. Increasingly they are portrayed as wealthy SUV driving rude self-centered self righteous big haired mall dwelling materialistic morons willing to kill or imprison anyone who doesn’t share their particular belief system.
