In computer science, a cache (pronounced "cash" /kæʃ/ or /kaʃ/) is a collection of data duplicating original values stored elsewhere or computed earlier, where the original data is expensive (usually in terms of access time) to fetch or compute relative to reading the cache. Once the data is stored in the cache, future use can be made by accessing the cached copy rather than re-fetching or recomputing the original data, so that the average access time is lower.

Caches have proven to be extremely effective in many areas of computing because access patterns in typical computer applications have locality of reference. There are several kinds of locality, but this article primarily deals with data that are accessed close together in time (temporal locality). The data might or might not be located physically close to each other (spatial locality).

PGA West asked Pete Dye to build the toughest course in the world, and many people think he did too good a job (Phil Mickelson among them). Apple and LG each plan to launch new laptops. one that's supposed to ship this month with hybrid disk drives. The new drives are like hybrid cars in that the NAND flash memory works in conjunction with the spinning disk, kicking in data that can be cached like portions of the operating system, which can make for much faster boot up and resume time.

Hdparm is a command line utility recently ported to Windows that can set disk parameters such as drive caches, sleep mode, power management, acoustic management, and DMA settings. I have been searching for something like this to shut down my backup drive when I'm not using it. It's a great energy saver and can extend the life of your drive.
